I finished a new painting after spending a few hours in the poorly insulated/not heated ~~garage~~ studio. I love that I have the space even if I can't feel my toes that well when I come in for the night.

I'm really liking this painting and am excited with ideas for the next one and looking ahead to 2012.

Completed the garage into art studio renovation.

Since my last post, I've finished a new small painting, re-worked a larger painting and started another largish one.

Gotten my completed paintchip total over 400! Here's some pictures of 384 paintchips installed in the new studio in two different grids.

and drink tea and watch movies and listen to the rain and make things. I've been sewing paintchips and thinking about what I want this project to become. My process has always been to ~~try~~ trust the making. Its a process that fills me with both wonder and self doubt. I've been ruminating and sewing and starting to figure it out. I want it to be ambitious. I've been thinking about a stopping number. I'm over 300, 317 I think.
I want to make a chart out of them, or an infographic, or a long line that goes to unexpected places.

So I put a bunch of work Saatchi online tonight, and in the midst of trying to describe the kinds of paintings I've been making lately this spewed out. It seems right, this body of work is about the things I like to spend time looking at, and in a very roundabout way a comment on the struggle to find that balance between urban/rural/wild. I'm drawn to the kinds of places where that exist on those edges. I've long admired the beauty found in abadoned buildings and at the waters edge.

i make paintings. this series is a reflection of my fascination with the spaces where land/sea, nature/built environment overlap and try to co-exist. i'm smitten with the coast, the columbia river gorge, rivers of all sizes, mountains in the distance, broken down buildings, bridges, rain drops, trees, rock and earthen layers, pictorial logic & waves.

I'm headed down to the ~~basement~~ studio to clean and organize and make it more work friendly and hopefully work on a new little painting.

I keep meaning to update this blog more, and I really don't have a good reason why I haven't. I think my dislike of the quality of images my little point and shoot digital camera produces, along with my general ability to distract myself have something to do with it. Nonetheless I keep plugging along. Making things and taking pictures of them.

A few weeks ago I finished another large-ish painting. Another in my ongoing series about land and water and nature and manmade and the intersections between all of these things. Inspired first by a wonderfully decrepid building I saw on the side of the road somewhere between Alsea and Waldport.

I probably should have posted this while the show was still up. But I had the opportunity this summer to be in an excellently curated group show called "I want to feel at home here" this summer at Milepost5.

Meg did a bang up job curating her first show. And I feel lucky to have been included with so many great artists from around the country. Here are a couple of images from the show itself. I ended up showing 180 of my ever growing paintchip collection, arranged in a grid 18 long by 10 high. It turned out great, even if it took a ridiculously long time to hang in a straight line (5+ hours) and only slightly less to take down (3 hours).

I've spent the last week furiously sewing circles onto slightly larger paintchips for a show in hong kong. It was one of those things I signed up for, then put on the back burner. It happened as we moved into the house and got engaged.

Least you think I've been a total slacker, I've been making art for another show, planning a wedding, settling into a house, setting up an art studio, along with a few other things.

I learned a new word last week, Riparian. A riparian zone is the space where land meets water, that special ecosystem found for example at a riverbank. Ecotones and Riparian zones.

Application for a new gallery finished. Two upcoming exhibitions (more info soon). The creative juices are starting to flow, I woke up this morning thinking about combining papercuts with larger paintchip samples, but for now I'm gonna post my new painting, "where land meets water." Appropriately today I read a quote today:

"A painting is never finished - it simply stops in interesting places." ~ Paul Gardner

I feel likes its in a pretty interesting place at the moment, perhaps not quite finished but at a pretty interesting place nonetheless.

neglected but not forgotten - 192 paintchips

There's been a lot of change in the last two months. A new job, a loss of a new job. A new house with room for a studio, an end to the Sellwood studio. An engagement!
I haven't been making art like I want to be, but i've been making some. And painting rooms and unpacking and planting strawberries, and planning a garden, and today I finally set the easel up in the new house. I feel the itch, and know I'll have more to post soon.

Through it all, i've still been sewing paintchips, a project that's travelled with me now to my 3rd house in 18 months and grown much larger than I ever thought possible. I spent the better part of the afternoon hanging them up today in the house - seeing what I've got done, trying to incorporate some none striped paintchips into the mix, and I think they work. Much better than anticipated, and counting. 192 paintchips so far. I'll break 200 for sure. Sometime soon I think and planning for their public debut.

At the 5th Annual Portland Loveshow.

This year I submitted the painting I did for my Nana after she passed away in 2008.

I posted a blog about it when I finished it last year, which can be read here.

It took me a long time to be ready to paint it, when my granpa died the year before the painting came fast, this one was slower, needing more time to sit and be nurtured - which seems so very fitting for a person who was always there with a hug or a kind word or a batch of cookies.

sometimes I love my job

Its winter in Portland, which means lots of gray, rainy days where there's no real light. Its hard to get motivated to leave the apartment, and get to the studio. So I'm a bit behind in posting here. Today there was blue skies and I loaded the dog in the car and drove to the coast to get inspired. I walked the beach at Gearhart and found the boatyard in Astoria and took lots of reference pictures. I'm in that creative place that is hard to document. It involves a lot of thinking. Work has started on another large painting, re-invigorated with salty air and a little bit of sunshine I plan to have more finished images to post soon.

As I've been working on both the sewn paintchip project and the silverpoint drawings, I've slowly realized that they're part of the same body of work. I've got the first draft of an artist statement started (see bottom of post). 140 seems like the right number of paintchips for now. I've got about 20 more finished (some repeats), and for as much as I'd like to have all 350. The paintchips I've been using are no longer available at Lowe's. So, for now at least the paintchip project is at a pause. I've still got some for sale at etsy.

Artist Statement:

I am inspired by the tension found in the convergence of new technologies and traditional art making techniques.

I've long been interested in how information is visualized - data mapping, cartography and infographics have been sources of inspiration. This body of work is an exploration into the ways in which identity is formed and changed by the convergence of new technologies (such as social networking), the natural environment, and relationships. I am fascinated by the ways Internet and social networking have transformed the ways which people communicate both on & offline. This transformation leaves me nostalgic and drawn to making art that is labor intensive in mediums such as hand sewing and silverpoint.

With the silverpoint, I am drawn both to the quality of the mark and the history of this method of drawing. These large scale silverpoint drawings, through their use of intersecting fingerprint-like shapes, explore the relationship between the unique and the group. The clustered nature of these drawings also evoke the networks, or clusters found both online and in nature. The individual shapes in these works are reminiscent of repetitive ovular shapes frequently found in "natural" organic forms such as fingerprints, tree rings, and mussel shells.

This idea is also explored through a series of hand sewn paintchips. Each paintchip features sewn concentric circles that call to mind nests and serve as a metaphor for the idea of home; exploring the nature of home and identity and how this is formed and informed by relationships and environment. I am particularly interested in the ways in which identity can vary between mediums such as the difference between one's online persona and identity in person or at work for example.

Both the silverpoint drawings and sewn paintchips also explore the relationship between the individual and group through the use of unique multiples. The groupings suggest the ways in which people are both part of many different yet intersecting groups, and the ways in which we seem to naturally form attachments and groups with people or things that can be both alike and yet different from ourselves. This phenomena can be observed in the natural environment but is now also evident when viewing online groups and has become more apparent as sites like Twitter and Facebook have expanded the ways in which we form connections. There seems to be both an enlarging and narrowing aspect to this way of communicating, and this body of work grew out of my interest in this subject.

This week, I got back into the swing of studio time by lining paintchips up end to end on a larger wall. There are 350 different colored paintchips, and i've sewn nested shapes on just about 1/3rd of them so far. When I started, I never thought it would turn into such a large project, but I hope in the next few months to really have a wall covered in sewn paintchips, arranged in some logical way. Right now they're arranged numerically by the top stripe color. Its got some starts and stops, some fairly substantial gaps, and strangely quite a few repeats...but its an interesting way to ascribe some order to them without arranging just by color. I think its mostly working, at least as a starting point, and I'm hoping once I'm finished that there will be an interesting gradation achieved by that first striped line.

This morning on my way to work, I picked up my silverpoint drawings from a professional photographer. I really struggled to get the detail and correct color on my own, and really don't have the necessary camera/lighting to capture images with this much detail. Dave at Perceptual Intent however, knocked it out of the park. Its nice to finally feel like I can really share these drawings online. So, without further ado.

In related news I'll have work up in two locations for the month of October. Selected paintings from the series "heart loot: and other small stories" will be on view at the Ginger Salon (pearl district location) thru November 2nd. Also, two of the above silverpoint drawings will be included in the Marylhurst University Art Alumni Show October 17th - November 25th. Opening reception is Friday Oct. 16th from 6-9pm.

I've been thinking for awhile about posting a list of things that are inspiring me at the moment. Its a disparate group consisting of random phrases, songs, images, artists, observations, etc. This seems like as good a place as any to put that kind of list.

• Neko Case - I freaking love her voice and the fact that she now lives in Vermont with a barn full of pianos (seriously, how cool is that?) The lyrics of middle cyclone are so beautiful and vulnerable and strong at the same.

• Old Nautical Maps; I've always loved maps, especially old maps. Lately I've been interested in bodies of water, and nautical maps. I discovered the NOAA has a great online archive of old nautical charts/maps. I could spend hours there downloading historical maps.

• Social networking. Its a hole new world of connecting to people and its made me think a lot lately about connection, and communicating in 140 characters, and overlapping spheres. Its a part of the silverpoint drawings I'm making, and relates to what has come to feel like the overarching theme of my artmaking; the relationship of the unique to the whole.

Photographing my work last night, I came across this picture that I'm pretty sure I didn't even mean to take. Its lovely.

I've been making progress on a new painting (I think its getting close to done), and I've been thinking a lot of this piece and the last being the nexus for a new body of work, inspired by the combination of water and the built environment, and my long held desire to live in a little house near water. I've been seeking out the ocean more & more in the last few months (loving that I'm a fairly easy drive away). Walking to the slough on my lunch break, watching the Willamette every morning as I take my dog to the park. I feel a connection with water and the space around it, and keep seeing these wonderfully decrepit boats along roadways and in yards. Finding myself drawn to time ravaged buildings, 1850s anatomical drawings & maps of waterways and highways and tidal charts I don't know how to read. One of my favorite ways of creating is to fill myself up with looking and see what happens.

Since my last post, I went on vacation, and got sick and didn't spend enough time in the studio. I've got a small backlog of images to post, and debated whether I should put everything in one post or not and decided to just go ahead and do it, as I'm planning a blog announcement for later this week (stay tuned.) My artmaking is a bit all over the place. I made silhouette portraits for Mother's Day of me and my siblings, made my largest silverpoint drawing yet, and started real work on another big painting, and of course I'm still sewing nest-like shapes onto paintchips. I know I've said it before, but I'm saying it again, I missed painting big.

So, without further rambling on my part here's a sample of what I've been making in the last month or so.

I love the color inspiration of paint chips (i'm particularly fond of the Martha Stewart Collection at Lowe's). They're compact size, the little hints of pure hue, I've collected them for a long time. Sometimes I think every trip to the hardware store necessitates a stop by the paint department for this very reason. When I didn't have a studio this fall I found my collection and started sewing concentric circles, loosely arranged around the idea of nesting into them; a project I've continued in my new space. These tightly wound circles with a subtle texture that seem to want to be traced. For a long time I haven't known what to do with them, but now i'm starting to think i need to make more and more and more, and cover a wall in them, or place them in a long tight line down a long hall....or something. I really like the way they group together.

My studio time of late hasn't produced much worth photographing. There are lots of projects in the starting phase & a belated Mother's Day present that needs finishing. I like the work of starting things - stretching canvases, painting and sanding layers of ground - but it isn't really much to look at. And when I'm home watching the LOST finale I can sew my tiny concentric circles onto paint chips.

Its been a hectic month. I moved into a new apartment, entered a new decade and drove to the coast for my art opening at Coos Art Museum. It was a great turnout and a really lovely show full of 60+ talented painters from several western states. Images of the exhibition are now available online, but of course art always looks better in person.

I haven't quite decided on a title yet, but this painting is very inspired my Nana and was conceived as an elegy to her. It is my second elegy painting, the first

elegy: to the last great green mountain man was painted in 2007.

Its always hard for me to decide when a painting is finished, especially as reworking is such a huge part of my process. I could rework details for years, but learning when to stop is an important lesson. So I'm posting this painting with a caveat...its most likely finished (but I might make a few small changes after I let it sit a little longer)

the evolution of a painting

A big part of my painting process is to start with the kernel of an idea, then work and rework and rework a painting, adding layers, taking shapes out, putting shapes back in until there's some semblance of a finished painting (how's that for a process, and a run-on sentence). I've been taking paintings of my latest painting, and I thought it might be interesting to show them. Its not quite finished yet, but I think its pretty close.

Friday I got word that my painting what remains will be included in the juried exhibition Expressions West at the Coos Art Museum. This Annual juried competition features the works of painters from 13 western states

Richard V. West is an art historian, curator, author, and former art museum director in a forty-year career that has spanned both coasts from Maine to Washington. He is currently Director Emeritus of the Frye Art Museum in Seattle and serves as a trustee of the Gage Academy of Art.

West has juried a wide variety of distinguished regional and national exhibitions covering all media throughout the United States. He has also actively curated a number of art exhibitions that reveal his interests in both the fine arts and popular culture – from ancient Greek art to contemporary editorial cartoons The co-author of books such as Language of the Print and Standing in the Tempest: The Painters of the Hungarian Avant-Garde, 1908-1930, Richard is currently preparing a monograph on the American painter and illustrator, Rockwell Kent.

It was a productive weekend. Saturday I drove to the beach and took lots of pictures of waves, and cave walls and weathered logs. Sunday i spent most of the day in the studio finishing the my second large silverpoint drawing and making good headway on a large painting. The whole experience was marred only slightly by the gash on my right index finger where a potato got away from me while making potato leek soup.

Now for the pictures (I'm having a hard time getting the silverpoint to show up bright, and am losing detail correcting in photoshop, they are much lovelier in person I think)

I'm obsessing over papercuts and embroidered lines.

Last night I couldn't sleep and I saw all these small tableau's around me. These little still lifes, the way my rubber boots were aligned near a plant, a bit of garlic in a small glass bowl on a windowsill. I've been thinking about my obsession with sewing threaded concentric lines onto paint chips, and tightly bound silverpoint drawings, paper cranes folded out of old grocery ads....wondering how all these things are related. And painting. Working again on a bigger painting (after almost 2 years of smaller ones), a eulogy of sorts that has been forming in my mind for a long time. Feeling almost ready to really open myself up, but not quite there, and also feeling a bit lost in the shuffle of my life, and thinking about what i want to do with the works that i create. Should I open an etsy shop, send work to more galleries, hunker down and really explore the ideas that seem to be shifting around me, go to grad school, learn to code websites, all of the above?

I've been looking at this artist alot, and another called know hope.

And how much i just want to repeat to myself over and over again, know hope.

Oh elusive line. I've been searching you out in the most unusual of forms. Sewing you into paper, drawing you with ever finer detail and sharper pencil and now transcribing you with metal. Yes metal - silverpoint to be exact. An old, old drawing method favored by Renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci. I like you. You're metallic glean, the smoothness of the golden drawing ground you requested, the way you don't let me erase you, but are at the same time somehow forgiving of my missteps. These are poor quality "work in progress" pictures, of a new kind of drawing I've been making. It relates to individuality and collective, and the idea of repeating forms in nature, and the various ways we determine knowledge, and probably some more things i'm too tired to talk coherently about just yet. Something is brewing though, I can feel it simmering under the surface and I'm excited to see where it takes me.

I'll post better pictures when I'm farther along.

Intentions

The sky is gorgeous and stormy - full of that light that only comes in the afternoon full of pacific northwest rain and sun reflecting of of industrial buildings looming with their non-descriptive boxiness. Its January 2. I've been thinking for a few days about the possibility in a new year and what my intentions should be. Last years were modest, but I accomplished them - this makes me want to think bigger. I feel the world fresh with possibility. I am unfocused at work - more so than usual - and am spending the afternoon listening to a long last band and thinking about art projects and realizing that its been much, much too long since i last updated this blog. I have a new digital camera now (thank you Erik's step parents) and really no excuses. Perhaps that should be my first intention - update the daily art blog - maybe not everyday, but certainly more than 24 times a year. once a week seems like a worthy goal.

This thursday, I will be in LA for the opening of my show at Infusion Gallery. I'll have 9 paintings in the group show. All of the work is from the series "heart loot & other small stories" which I've been working on for about a year now. Opening Reception: July 10; 6:00 – p:00 PM

Infusion Gallery is pleased to present the work of Portland, Oregon based artist Michelle Daly. The exhibition will be on view July 1-25, and a reception will be held Thursday July 10th, from 6-9pm. The artist will be in attendance.

The artist, Michelle Daly has exhibited in several group and juried exhibitions around the Pacific Northwest and her work can be found in several prominent private collections. The exhibition "heart loot & other small stories" features 9 small-scale oil on canvas paintings. This is her first Los Angeles area exhibition.

Michelle creates abstract oil paintings that explore unconventional narrative and storytelling. Using abstraction and the process of painting as a metaphor for how we experience life and the interconnectedness of human beings both to one another and to the world around them, Michelle tells stories that don't have easy words and often ambiguous conclusions.

Michelle says she is "trying to strip experiences and stories to that one moment that says everything in a way that is part personal, part metaphor, part stand in for the universal themes (mostly of love and romance and everything that goes along with that)" in a way that is simultaneously refreshingly honest and stripped of sentimentality as well as unapologetically beautiful.
